Health and Wellness Camp June 2016

1 camp, 2 rafting trips, 3 weeks, 5 hours of science instruction, 8 girls, 9 hours of yoga, 10 hours of fitness,12 hours of food justice training, 15 miles of bike riding,  20 trips to the rec center, 30 of our favorite Beyoncé songs to keep us motivated, 75 hours of laughter, 100 hours of making new friends, 120 hours of camp, and enough joyfulness for a lifetime.

Maude Lofton, MD

Maude Brown Lofton, MD was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. She graduated from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. and received her Doctorate of Medicine degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dr. Lofton completed her pediatric residency training at the University Hospital in Jacksonville where she was selected to serve as Chief Resident of Pediatrics. During her tenure the position was upgraded to the level of junior faculty position. Upon completion of her residency, Dr. Lofton joined the University of Florida College of Medicine faculty as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics.

 

While living in Jacksonville, Dr. Lofton, served on the Mayor’s Commission for Children and Youth; the Governor’s Commission on Children and Youth for the state of Florida; and, wrote a weekly column for the Jacksonville Advocate Newspaper. Dr. Lofton received numerous awards and commendations from the city of Jacksonville, area churches, the Jacksonville Urban League, the NAACP, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for her child and family advocacy. She was on the faculty of Howard University Hospital, the University of Alabama College of Medicine at Birmingham, where she pursued advanced training in Child Development; and, the University of Louisville College of Medicine. She served on the admissions committee at both the University of Florida and the University of Alabama.

 

A longstanding member of the National Association of Health Services Executives, Dr. Lofton is retired from the active practice of medicine and resides in Denver, Colorado. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and attends New Hope Baptist Church. Her focus is now on supporting health and education programs for youth; leadership development for girls and young women; and women’s health and wellness. Dr. Lofton is in collaboration with her personal trainer to create a science-based fitness curriculum that improves physical and psychological and emotional health. Dr. Lofton’s attitude towards life is a philosophy of being “forever young.” She is an avid recreational tennis player, enjoys pickle ball, bowling, gardening, reading and has recently taken up golf. She has two children, Johanna and Kevin Russell; and three grandchildren, Jaylen, Marcel and Zaria. Check out her website here.
